Tree Cosies

August 14 - 28 2011, Emerson Street, Napier.

Creative Napier, Napier Inner City Marketing and Skeinz are bringing this exciting new event to Napier to brighten up the winter weeks. Using the palm trees down Emerson Street, knitting groups and individuals are invited to ‘adopt’ a tree and make a creative knitted wrapping which will dress their tree from Sunday 14 August to Sunday 28 August 2011, showing Napier’s softer side before we are overrun with Rugby World Cup mania!

Thought to have originated in the United States by knitters to find a creative way to use their left over yarn and known as yarn bombing, this form of witty graffiti is rapidly gathering enthusiastic participants and appreciative audiences around the world.

The great thing about yarn bombing is:

· It softens the edges of a harsh environment.

· There is the non-threatening nature of knitting.

· It re-defines the nature of graffiti with a non-permanent, non-destructive medium.

· It actively contributes to a more positive type of global warming.

· If you don’t like it just unpick it!

Children’s Arts Expo Easter 2011

Asher Hall, St Paul’s Church, Napier

WOW! We did it! Our first Children’s Arts Expo was a huge success, despite some teething problems and the heaviest recorded rainfall for years. Reformatting the Children’s Arts Festival of previous years by changing the three hour workshops into shorter 45 minute ones was the recipe for success. We were able to deliver 8 different arts experiences all running at the same time, so there was something for everyone. Parents as well as children were thrilled with the variety on offer. The most popular workshops were the cup cake decorating, the print making and the poker work.

Creative Napier would like to acknowledge the help and support that enabled us to deliver our first successful Children’s Arts Expo.

We would particularly like to thank Pub Charities, Creative Communities and Napier City Council for their funding sponsorship.

Thanks also to The Napier Mail, Nelson Signs, printing.com, Classic Hits Bay City Radio, Cake Stuff and Skeinz of Onekawa for their generosity.

And a final thanks to the tutors and helpers who struggled with three days of torrential rain, a leaky building and indoor drumming workshops to entertain around 300 steaming children, who between them took part in over 700 workshops. Well done, all of you!
